Bills GM doesn't regret trading back with Chiefs in first round of NFL Draft

One of the biggest surprises in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft was the Bills willing to move back in a trade with the Chiefs, who've eliminated them from the playoffs in three of the last four seasons.

Kansas City traded pick Nos. 32, 95 and 221 to Buffalo for pick Nos. 28, 133 and 248, per ESPN's Field Yates.

With the 28th overall pick, the Chiefs then selected Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who ran the fastest 40-yard dash (4.21 seconds) in NFL Combine history.

Worthy is more than just a speedster, too, as he led the Big 12 in receiving yards (2,755) and receiving touchdowns (26) over the past three seasons.

The Bills have been highly criticized since, but general manager Brandon Beane doesn't regret making the deal with Kansas City.

"I could see them taking a receiver but you don't truly know ... But where they were moving from, I don't think it mattered to us who they were picking," Beane said, via Matt Parrino of NewYorkUpstate.com.

Buffalo, which later traded out of the No. 32 pick, now has two second-round picks, one third, one fourth and four fifth-rounders that will allow the team to replenish what it lost this offseason.

The Bills watched several starters, including wide receiver Gabe Davis (Jaguars), center Mitch Morse (Jaguars), edge-rusher Leonard Floyd (49ers) and safety Jordan Poyer (Dolphins), leave via free agency while also trading four-time Pro Bowl WR Stefon Diggs to the Texans.

As for the Chiefs, they were more than happy to do business with the opportunity to add to quarterback Patrick Mahomes' arsenal of weapons, which already saw the addition of wide receiver Marquise Brown in March.

"It's a speed game and the more speed you have on the field, the harder it is for defenses to take away different elements of the game," general manager Brett Veach said, via Adam Teicher of ESPN.com. "Anytime you can add speed and add a guy with that type of versatility, I think you're going to be interested."

Buffalo may come to regret its decision, but it is optimistic of the talent it can still add. The Bills kick off Day 2, which begins at 7 p.m. ET on Friday, with the first pick of the second round, and they have plenty of options to choose from.
