Breakout receiver and current Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver, Rashee Rice could be released imminently this offseason. Rice is a suspect in an alleged assault that injured a man at a Dallas nightclub, according to Dallas Morning News. It’s the latest offseason trouble for the SMU product who has been emerging as a big-time receiver for the Super Bowl champions. This comes after his arrest for involvement in a six-car crash in Dallas in March, leaving at least seven people with injuries.

The former second-rounder is already facing multiple charges from that car crash so it seems like this recent incident could be enough for the Chiefs to move on. As of this posting, Rice’s attorney and the Chiefs have no comment. Rice is already facing a multi-game suspension so the troubles are just piling. It sounds like the Chiefs made the logical move to select Xavier Worthy from Texas in this year’s draft to be his possible replacement.

However, the Chiefs are being patient with the SMU product but that could always wear out. It seems like if the NFL decides to suspend him for one season then they could release him. Head Coach Andy Reid said he is letting law enforcement handle the situation and they will revisit to see what his future holds with the team. However, one can wonder how long this will play out until the team eventually wants to do the waiting game.

It was looking like the Chiefs were going to be without a receiver this season. The team was also able to acquire Marquise Brown on a one-year deal for veteran help. It sounds like the opinions and talking heads wanting the Chiefs to cut Rice may come sooner than expected.

Breakout Receiver Rashee Rice Could Be Released Imminently

The Release May Come Soon

The punishment of his release isn’t close to what is facing in real life. Rice could be facing jail time, so it’s hard to envision that the Chiefs move on from him. He has every right to defend his actions but the case doesn’t look promising on his side. It makes one think if his on-field talent can mask the amount of off-field issues he’s been facing this offseason.

The Chiefs are already investing so much in the SMU product, especially coming off an explosive rookie season. During his rookie year, he was able to notch 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns while adding more yards on their playoff this season. Kansas City probably wouldn’t have made it another second consecutive Super Bowl without his contributions. It’s why the team saw potential in the SMU product by selecting him in last year’s draft with the second pick.

However, Worthy probably needs a year to adjust to the scenery of the NFL but they have Marquise Brown. They have other weapons like Travis Kelce and Kadarius Toney that Patrick Mahomes can use. The Chiefs may need one more veteran addition to be a reliable weapon while Worthy adjusts and can team alongside Brown. Here are some late-minute wide receivers the Chiefs could add.

Possible Wide Receivers Free Agents

There were rumors that Tyler Boyd could sign with the team but he just signed a contract with the Titans this week. This leaves the receiver market wearing thin after Odell Beckham Jr. agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins. However, guys like Michael Thomas and Zay Jones are still available. It’s not a big need for the Chiefs but one drastic injury could leave the receiving corps in shambles.

The team won’t be able to afford a trade for Tee Higgins, Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel so a cheap signing would be logical.
