The Buffalo Bills are cutting an All-Pro starter for the defense just days after trading away a solid offensive lineman, Ryan Bates, to the Chicago Bears to clear cap space. The Bills are in the red by over $40 million, and free agency looms next week.
Cap space issues are the latter part of a double-edged sword when a team has a franchise qualification. Josh Allen’s extension has meant the Bills have had to part ways with pillars of their defense. The Bills had to let Tremaine Edmunds leave in free agency last offseason.
Per Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, the Bills are releasing safety Jordan Poyer in a bid to get the cap space underweight. The cut will save the Bills $7.5 million on the books.
