Carolina Panthers sign veteran defensive back who has familiarity with team's defensive staff
Sam Greene/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Carolina Panthers continued their roster makeover on Friday, signing free agent safety Nick Scott per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Scott is a five-year veteran who was most recently with the Cincinnati Bengals. His tenure with the Bengals was disappointing as he was released after just the first year of a three-year contract that he signed with the team last offseason. Scott began the 2023 season as Cincinnati's starting strong safety but was benched in Week 11 due to poor play.

Scott was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft. There he played for Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who was the Rams safeties coach at the time. Panthers defensive game coordinator Jonathan Cooley was also part of that Rams staff as their defensive backs coach.

Scott had a career year with the Rams in 2022, recording 86 total tackles, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. Now reunited with Evero, the Panthers are hoping that Scott can get back to playing like he did in L.A. He won't likely start for Carolina but could be a valuable depth piece and special teams contributor.
