Commanders HC Ron Rivera suggests QB change could happen after 49ers game

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera is sticking with quarterback Taylor Heinicke for this Saturday's game at the 10-4 San Francisco 49ers.

Heinicke may be playing for his job on the afternoon of Christmas Eve.

"I think the biggest thing, more than anything else, is sticking with Taylor and what we're trying to establish," Rivera responded when asked Monday if he was considering making a quarterback change, per Michael Phillips of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "(A switch) is something that obviously is talked about, obviously out there. It is something that, you know, to be quite frank, I do have to think about at some point.

"But if we can continue to get back on track and play the way we've played and do things that we've done, then we'll stick with where we are."

Heinicke lost a pair of fumbles and gifted the New York Giants with a defensive touchdown in Sunday's 20-12 loss that dropped Washington to 7-6-1 on the season:

The 29-year-old completed 17-of-29 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown versus Big Blue and has served as Washington's QB1 since Carson Wentz went down with a fractured right ring finger against the Chicago Bears on Oct. 13. Wentz holds a 2-4 record as the club's starter, while Heinicke has Washington possessing the conference's final playoff berth heading into Week 16.

The Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions, both 7-7, trail the Commanders and 8-5-1 Giants in the battle for postseason berths.

According to ESPN stats, Heinicke is 23rd among qualified quarterbacks with an 87.7 passer rating, 27th with a 41.4 total QBR and 28th with a 61.4% completion percentage on the campaign. In eight games, he has 10 touchdown passes and five interceptions.

Following the holiday weekend, Washington will host the Cleveland Browns (6-8) on Jan. 1.
