The Dallas Cowboys defense took a major hit last season when it lost starting cornerback Trevon Diggs to an ACL injury. Even so, the team didn’t feel the loss as hard as it would have if they didn’t have a breakout star to take his place. DaRon Bland, now heading into his third year in the league, ended up leading the NFL in interceptions and he also broke the record for pick-sixes in a single season.

Despite the success he found in Diggs’ absence, Bland is still over the moon to be getting his teammate back soon. The young corner gave an eye-popping quote about the recovering DB when asked what fans should expect from his return.

“I mean, a lot of people are not expecting what Tre is gonna come back with,” Bland said at the Reliant Energy Home Run Derby on Wednesday night. “I know what Tre is gonna come back with. It’s going to be something dangerous. Can’t wait.”

Diggs, 26, was off to a fast start before tearing his ACL last season. In two games, he came down with an interception and forced a fumble, leading the way for the Cowboys’ defense.

Before tearing his ACL, Diggs finalized a contract extension with Dallas that made him one of the highest-paid corners in the league. He signed a megadeal for five years and $97 million.

The Cowboys will lean on their young star cornerbacks in 2024 after not re-signing veteran Stephon Gilmore. Gilmore remains unsigned as a free agent this offseason.

Diggs enters year five in the NFL

At 26 years old, Diggs has already established himself as one of the best ball hawks in the league. He led all NFL defenders with 17 interceptions from 2020-22. In 2022, he had a career-high 50 solo tackles and three interceptions. Diggs also took two of his 11 interceptions home for touchdowns.

A second-round pick for the Cowboys out of Alabama, Diggs previously played on a four-year rookie deal for $6.32 million. He’ll try to bounce back in 2024.

The former Crimson Tide star recently saw his brother, Stefon Diggs, traded from the Bills to the Houston Texans. He heavily advocated for the Cowboys to try to get him, alas, it didn’t work out that way. Now, the duo is set to go head-to-head this season when the Texans travel to play the Cowboys. The NFL has not set the date for that in-state matchup yet.
