Draft guru believes he has a good idea of what Bears can get for Justin Fields

What the Chicago Bears will do with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and subsequently quarterback Justin Fields, is perhaps the biggest question of the NFL offseason.

However, ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. believes he has a fairly good idea of how that situation will play out. Kiper Jr. has the Bears injecting new blood into their offense and taking USC QB Caleb Williams in his latest mock draft, electing to find a trade partner for Fields.

He points to the 2019 trade that sent Josh Rosen from the Arizona Cardinals to the Miami Dolphins as the benchmark for a potential Fields trade, but thinks Chicago should aim a little higher.

“Chicago doesn't have ideal leverage to trade Fields, but it only takes two suitors to create a market,” Kiper Jr. wrote. “Remember that when the Cardinals traded Josh Rosen one year after drafting him at No. 10 overall, they got a second-round pick from the Dolphins. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bears get a first-rounder in return for Fields.”

Kiper Jr. points out that trading Fields and drafting Williams resets the clock for Chicago in having to dish out franchise QB money.

Fields, 24, is heading into Year 4 of his rookie deal. If Chicago kept him, it could exercise his fifth-year option this offseason, but the team would then have to pay a presumably expensive mega-extension after 2025. By taking Williams, the Bears don’t have to worry about doling out that kind of money for a minimum of four more years.

Should the Bears put Fields on the trade block, there would likely be a strong list of potential suitors including the Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks — all of whom are slotted too far back in the draft to land one of the top three QBs on the board (Williams, UNC’s Drake Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels).
