Eli Manning thinks NFL should consider video review for roughing the passer penalties

Add Eli Manning to the list of football personalities who think the NFL should consider allowing coaches to request video replay reviews of roughing the passer penalties.

"I think it’s pretty obvious when you drive a guy into the ground as opposed to tackling him. Maybe you could bring instant replay into these calls," Manning said about the subject while speaking with NFL insider Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, per Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post. "Just because they are such important calls and difference makers."

Manning then touched upon the incident that involved Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones being penalized for landing on Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr "with his full body weight" during this past Monday's prime-time game.

"If you get a sack — you watch the [Derek] Carr one — it’s a sack, fumble, ball going the other way. Now, it’s 15 yards and a first down the other way. That can be a big point swing in a game," Manning continued during his comments. "I think you just have to make sure the exact things these refs are looking for are locked down so you’re not getting some of these calls that shouldn’t call, and taking away some of these plays from the defense."

Jones argued after Monday's win over the Raiders that teams should be able to review roughing calls, and Kevin Seifert of ESPN later suggested the NFL could consider such a rule change over the winter months.

However, Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press reported Tuesday that it's "unlikely" the league will permit video reviews of roughing penalties anytime soon.

For what it's worth, instances of roughing the passer flags dropped dramatically over the first five weeks of the current campaign compared to previous seasons.
