Father of a former Vols QB explains why he 'hated' the Patriots' selection of Tennessee QB Joe Milton in 2024 NFL Draft
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The father of a former Tennessee Vols quarterback explained this week why he "hated" the New England Patriots' selection of UT quarterback Joe Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Former Super Bowl MVP Phil Simms joined his son, Matt Simms, who is a former Vols quarterback (2010 to 2011), on the Simms Complete podcast and he explained why he didn't like New England's decision to draft Milton.

"I hated it. I mean...I hated it," said the elder Simms when asked about his thoughts on the Patriots drafting Milton. "I hated it for (QB) Drake Maye (New England's first round pick in this year's draft). Listen, you know there's nothing like being a quarterback and walking out on the field and physically being the [most] capable guy. Just, you know, the look. And now you're going to put Joe Milton in that process. Another rookie? That, to me, makes it worse. [Joe Milton is] big, great arm, much better and more polished than I expected when I studied him at Tennessee this year. So that was impressive. Great kid and mobile. So a lot to like."

"Hell, he's just another version of Drake Maye," added Simms while discussing Milton. "So you know, it's just me as an ex quarterback, I don't like it. I just don't like the whole circumstance, the way it looks, and what kind of little box it can kind of put Drake Maye into."

It's clear that Simms is high on Milton. And he only hates the Patriots' selection of Milton because he feels like it shows a lack of confidence in Maye. And because Milton could possibly overshadow Maye this summer due to his big arm and his elite athleticism.

Of course, if Maye is going to be the guy in New England, then he can't let the team's selection of a quarterback in the sixth round affect his mentality. If the presence of Milton (or any other quarterback) puts added pressure on Maye, then he probably isn't poised to be the longterm answer for the Patriots.
