Is Bill Belichick waiting for a different job than the Falcons?

The Atlanta Falcons seemingly are in no hurry to make Bill Belichick their new head coach even though other clubs reportedly could consider reaching out to him as soon as this week.

"Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, multiple teams are quietly considering a potential run at Belichick," NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported on Sunday. "At least one currently has a head-coaching vacancy. At least one currently does not."

At the time Florio shared that update, neither the Tampa Bay Buccaneers nor the Buffalo Bills had yet been eliminated from the ongoing postseason tournament. Those clubs did not have head-coaching vacancies as of Monday morning, but either could make for an interesting destination for a proven winner such as Belichick.

Belichick repeatedly has been linked this month with the Buccaneers, as there remain plenty of questions regarding whether current Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles is more than a placeholder at the position for a club that won the Super Bowl back in February 2021 and has made four-consecutive trips to the playoffs.

Following Sunday's 31-23 loss at the Detroit Lions, Bowles holds a lackluster overall record of 18-19 (postseason included) with the Buccaneers.

As for the Bills, the combination of head coach Sean McDermott and quarterback Josh Allen has accumulated one AFC Championship Game appearance, zero trips to the Super Bowl and no Most Valuable Player Awards.

Per Adam London of NESN, former Buffalo and New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan explained during Monday's edition of the ESPN "Get Up" program that he can envision a scenario where Bills ownership would view Belichick as an upgrade over McDermott.

"Believe me, I’m not just being reckless when I’m saying it," Ryan remarked. "If you’re going to move on from (McDermott), make no mistake, it’s for one guy. It’s for Bill Belichick."

In his latest "Football Morning in America" column, NBC Sports' Peter King wrote that "it’s weird" no team other than the Falcons has publicly revealed it has interviewed Belichick this winter. Perhaps that's because a front office located outside of Atlanta first must have an awkward conversation with its current head coach later this week.
