Jared Veldheer to make some unusual postseason history

Veteran offensive tackle Jared Veldheer isn't widely recognizable among even passionate football fans, but his name will be in the record books forevermore following this week. 

ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted on Monday afternoon that Veldheer is signing with the Green Bay Packers ahead of next Saturday's game versus the Los Angeles Rams. Veldheer started for the Indianapolis Colts this past Saturday but reverted to the club's practice squad after the loss to the Buffalo Bills. 

He is set to become the first NFL player in history to play for two teams in the same postseason. 

As Michael David Smith noted for Pro Football Talk, such a transaction normally would be prohibited by NFL rules. However, the league added flexibility for the campaign held amid the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that clubs could field healthy and available players. Once Veldheer returned to Indianapolis' practice squad, he became free to sign with any remaining team. 

Veldheer isn't joining Green Bay to merely serve as a spectator. He played every offensive snap for the Colts during Saturday's defeat and is expected to replace David Bakhtiari, who is sidelined with a season-ending knee injury.
