Jets' Zach Wilson doesn’t agree with ‘scapegoat’ label

New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson thinks pretty highly of teammate Aaron Rodgers, but he doesn’t necessarily agree with Rodgers’ recent assessment of how the Jets handled Wilson’s demotion to third string.

During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers admitted carrying a bit of guilt for Wilson’s fall from grace this season. Rodgers stated the Jets had made Wilson a scapegoat for the offensive woes that have led to a 4-6 start.

On Tuesday, Wilson pushed back a bit on Rodgers’ remarks, stating he’s in the situation he is because of his failure to produce results as New York’s QB1.

“I don't think I was scapegoated; absolutely not," Wilson told reporters. “You've got to look at the situation. We're not scoring touchdowns. Regardless of what I'm doing, my job as a quarterback is to help us score points. I can sit here and say I've had a bunch of growth and tremendous whatever this year, but if you're not scoring touchdowns, it doesn't matter. It really doesn't. And I get that.”

The Jets announced that Wilson would be New York’s third-string QB for Friday’s matchup with the Miami Dolphins. Tim Boyle, who relieved Wilson in Sunday’s 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills, will start and Trevor Siemian, who was on the team’s practice squad will be his backup.

Wilson threw for 81 yards, a touchdown and an interception against Buffalo before he was benched. He had just two touchdown passes in his last six games before being benched. Boyle didn’t fare much better, throwing for 33 yards and an interception, but he at least provides the Jets offense with a different dynamic.

In five seasons, the 29-year-old Boyle is 0-3 as a starter with 607 yards passing, three touchdowns and nine interceptions. Wilson was averaging 194.4 yards passing per game this year with six touchdowns and seven interceptions.
