Johnny Manziel released by CFL team amid odd circumstances
Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

Johnny Manziel tried to prove to scouts that he is worthy of an NFL comeback by playing in the CFL last season, but the former first-round pick will be unable to do that going forward.

On Wednesday, the Montreal Alouettes announced that the CFL ordered them to release Manziel after the 26-year-old “contravened the agreement” that made him eligible to play in the league.

Manziel had to jump through a number of hoops before the CFL allowed the Alouettes to sign him, so it’s unclear how he violated the conditions that were in place.

Manziel completed 106 of 165 passes for 1,290 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games with the Alouettes. He proved he is still capable of taking some big hits, but his play was not all that impressive.

It would not be a surprise if Manziel ends up playing in either the AAF or XFL.
