Lions president details plans for new helmet, uniform designs

It was but just six years ago that the Detroit Lions overhauled their uniforms, switching to a new typeface and new logo while removing black from its color scheme and alternate jersey rotation.

Now, it appears the Lions are switching things up again after president Rod Wood confirmed to the Detroit Free Press that the team would be introducing new helmets and uniforms over the next two seasons.

“There will not be new uniforms in 2023,” Wood said. “I know people get over their skis on that. It takes really two years to really get it going, so (chief brand officer) Brian (Facchini) and a team have been kind of working with Nike, looking at uniforms that will probably be for 2024. It could be an interesting overhaul of the uniforms. We will have a new alternative helmet though this year.”

Wood also confirmed that the Lions will stick to their traditional Honolulu blue, silver, dark gray steel and white color scheme and not donning the purple, gold and white colors of the Portsmouth Spartans, who moved to Detroit and became the Lions in 1934.

"We're not going to the Portsmouth colors," Wood said. "No, it'll still be within the blues and the grays. I think it's too early to say exactly, but I would describe it at least initially as probably being more change than the last time we did it, cause I think those were more subtle changes.”

The Lions have changed their logo and/or uniforms just a few times since moving to Detroit in 1934. The team wore scarlet and black briefly from 1948 to 1950 before switching back to its current color scheme.

There have also been some other minor changes over the years including altering the silver stripe patterns and the color of jersey numbers, adding a white outline around the logo and jersey numbers, a rotation of silver, blue and black facemasks plus the addition of a black alternate jersey.
