Following Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement last season, quarterback Mason Rudolph took a back seat to both Kenny Pickett and Mitchell Trubisky in 2022.
So why did the 27-year-old agree to a three-year deal to return to the Steelers in a third-string role when he reportedly had other opportunities elsewhere to possibly be a No. 2 QB?
"I tried to be reasonable with the expectation that I've had two starts in the last three seasons (and) not a whole lot of game tape to go off of,” Rudolph said on a recent episode of the “Steel Here” podcast. “But at the same time, there's just so many things that are attractive about this place. When they reached out and let me know the door was open, I think the continuity with the offense, knowing (offensive coordinator) Matt (Canada’s) system, kind of coming back and picking up without much of a learning curve, was attractive and then Mike (Tomlin) and the roster that they’ve built, we’ve got a chance to win a Super Bowl. So, who wouldn’t want to be a part of a team like that?”
There’s so little downside to the Mason Rudolph re-signing for the Steelers.

- Knows the system
- Gives good competition for Morgan at QB3
- Has rapport with most of the WRs
- Perfectly capable QB3
It's not known how many, or which teams specifically, showed interest in Rudolph. But it appears the Oklahoma State alum is prioritizing familiarity and a chance to win a championship over the possibility of more playing time.
In three seasons — all with Pittsburgh — Rudolph has a 5-4-1 record as a starter with 2,366 yards passing, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Though he spent the entire 2022 season in street clothes, thanks to the NFL’s new emergency quarterback rule, which allows a team to activate a third quarterback for games provided he’s on the team’s 53-man roster without losing a game day roster spot, Rudolph could at least dress for games in 2023.
