NFL executive hints Eagles' specialty play isn't going anywhere

Per Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith, the executive said that the NFL Competition Committee didn't talk about the "tush push" during their recent meeting at the NFL Scouting Combine because "everyone is on the same page that there’s no reason to ban it."

While Philadelphia's nearly unstoppable version of a quarterback sneak (which has also been called a "brotherly shove") will almost certainly still be around next season, Vincent added that the committee does plan to discuss the issue at the upcoming league meeting. That will be "just to ensure that any team that wants to be heard about the play has an opportunity to speak."

Smith wrote that the former cornerback, who made five straight Pro Bowls with the Eagles from 1999-2003, said there's a "general sentiment within the league" that "it’s a credit to the Eagles that they’ve found a short-yardage play that works so well for them."

The NFL Competition Committee considered banning the play call last offseason but ultimately decided to keep it as an option.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts and company have been using the seemingly unstoppable play on short yardage situations since the 2022 campaign. When it's done the right way, it results in the signal-caller getting an extra push or pull from teammates to get him either past the first down marker or into the end zone.

Hurts missed two games in 2022 but still finished second in the NFL with 13 rushing touchdowns and added two "tush push" scores in Super Bowl LVII. He tied for second in the NFL with 15 rushing touchdowns in 2023, 11 of which were from one yard out.
