The idea that Sean Payton could be the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals is picking up steam. Once seen as a long shot to bring in the Super Bowl-winning coach, the Cardinals might now be in the driver's seat for Payton, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Appearing on Friday's "Pat McAfee Show," Rapoport said he believes Payton's interest in the Cardinals' job is genuine.
"Going into this, I would've said, 'I don't know if Sean Payton would go to the Cardinals,' now I think it's pretty legit," Rapoport said.

On Wednesday, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero indicated that Payton is a "fan" of Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, a subject Rapoport also touched on.
"Kyler Murray is different. But Sean Payton is different too, and maybe that works," Rapoport said. "And he is a great coach and will no doubt give some accountability to Kyler Murray and make sure of it. They're not going to need a clause in the contract, etc."
It's widely believed that Payton wants a sideline gig and general manager duties wherever he lands. The Cardinals have openings at both positions.
After a 4-13 finish this season, Arizona fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury on Monday. Additionally, Cardinals GM Steve Keim, who had been on a medical leave of absence, officially left the team earlier this week.
The Cardinals' job might be too tempting for Payton to pass on if given complete control. Payton is already seemingly enamored by Murray, which certainly doesn't hurt Arizona's chances.
