Steelers RB Jeremy McNichols out for season with reported shoulder injury

It was learned last week that the Pittsburgh Steelers had signed veteran running back Jeremy McNichols to a one-year contract and released veteran running back and special teams operative Trey Edmunds.

McNichols' chances of finding a home with the organization ended before the first preseason game scheduled for Aug. 13.

Per the official NFL website, the Steelers placed McNichols on injured reserve on Wednesday because of a reported shoulder issue that will keep him out through the entire upcoming season. In a corresponding roster move, Pittsburgh announced the signing of undrafted ball-carrier Master Teague III.

McNichols was expected to compete with Benny Snell Jr., Anthony McFarland Jr., Mataeo Durant and Jaylen Warren for the right to be Pittsburgh's primary backup at the position behind starter and 2021 rookie Najee Harris. While with the Tennessee Titans last season, McNichols accumulated 156 rushing yards on 41 carries to go along with 28 receptions for 240 yards and a single touchdown.

Teague, meanwhile, played his college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2018 through 2021. He appeared in 31 games with six starts and tallied 1,764 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground. He was a second-team All-Big Ten selection for 2020.
