Steelers Scouting Little-known Quarterback Prospect Carter Bradley
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers likely won't draft a quarterback early in the 2024 NFL Draft. They already have Russell Wilson and Justin Fields as their two quarterbacks, but they might consider adding a sleeper quarterback as their third stringer. They could be eyeing one they think they can pick up in the later rounds.

One potential candidate is Carter Bradley from the South Alabama Jaguars. Despite being ranked 16th overall among quarterbacks by NFL Draft Buzz, he's a sleeper pick this year. His stock might rise after his recent Pro Day as well. Jim Nagy mentioned that the Steelers had a quarterback coach at his pro day, hinting at possible interest in this under-the-radar talent.

Bradley is expected to be picked in the late rounds or could even sign as a priority undrafted free agent. He might not be a household name, but he could be the perfect addition for the Steelers, providing depth at the position with little risk.

Although we don't know for sure who attended the Steelers' scouting, we do know it was a quarterbacks coach. With Tom Arth recently hired as the Steelers' new quarterbacks coach, it's possible it was him, although this hasn't been confirmed.

During his two seasons with the Jaguars, Bradley showcased his skills by completing 66% of his passes. Over that time, he threw for 47 touchdowns and only 19 interceptions, accumulating a total of 6,003 passing yards.

Even former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers, who now coaches high school football, shared his thoughts on Bradley's passing abilities during an interview with AL.com. Rivers, a close family friend of Bradley's, had glowing praise for the young gunslinger.

"He can throw the heck out of it. I mean, obviously, he's got the arm strength to make all the throws. You saw him today. And I think he's got a lot of experience - his career path, starting in Toledo and then making his way here and battling through some injuries along the way and finding a home here the last couple of years."

While the former NFL star quarterback praised Bradley's arm strength, it's worth noting that his perspective might be biased due to his close relationship with the Bradley family. Nonetheless, Bradley's performance at his Pro Day was impressive, and he stood out. This could potentially elevate his draft stock, despite initial projections placing him in the later rounds or maybe not even getting drafted at all. The Steelers are keeping a close watch on him.

Bradley's father, Gus Bradley, currently serves as the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts. Previously, he was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2013 to 2016. With over three decades of coaching experience at a high level, his influence undoubtedly shapes Bradley's football pedigree.

Steelers' Quarterback Room Could Use One More

As mentioned earlier, the Steelers have made some noise this offseason. They signed Wilson and Fields, and traded Kenny Pickett. They also let Mason Rudolph walk in free agency. With no need for a high-profile quarterback, someone like Bradley seems like a logical choice. He might even go undrafted, allowing the Steelers to pick him up as a free agent. Steeler Nation eagerly awaits the team's moves during the draft.

Adding a rookie quarterback is always thrilling. Bradley, standing at 6' 3", possesses excellent throwing skills. While he hasn't faced the highest level of competition in college, his talent and confidence shine through. Having a father with extensive coaching experience at the highest level is a definite advantage. Plus, gaining the endorsement of a former NFL star quarterback is a bonus.

As the draft approaches, Steelers fans are anxiously anticipating Pittsburgh's decisions. It seems the Steelers are considering adding one more quarterback late in the draft to complete their quarterback room. The 2024 season can't come soon enough for fans eager to see how the team shapes up.
