Steelers' TJ Watt Has Absolutely No Desire To Go Into Media But Maybe He Becomes A Coach
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers star outside linebacker, TJ Watt has a ton of respect for his older brother JJ Watt and his ability to excel in everything he does. That's on the football field (where the younger brother is chasing and beating some of the accolades set by the elder sibling), or off the field in JJ's retirement as he begins his foray into the media world at CBS Sports. TJ still has plenty of time left to continue his domination of opposing offensive lines, but when he does hang them up, people are wondering if he'll try to follow his brother's career path yet again.

The main career choices for players of the Watt brothers' caliber after the sunsets on their football career seem to be media, coaching, or fading into the background on all the money they earned. The junior Watt recently appeared on the Green Light podcast with another set of NFL brothers, Chris and Kyle Long, and they asked TJ whether he sees any kind of a future in media for himself after watching his brother dive into it.

"He's a natural and is good at everything he does," TJ said about his older brother. "I've always said public speaking or in front of a camera, he does really well. He plays well off of people and just a very smart guy, but it's not for me."

As anyone who has watched TJ give an interview will tell you, he might be a star, but he's not doing it to seek media attention.

He joked with the Long brothers that the Steelers' PR guy who set up the interview was probably outside the room laughing his head off because TJ tries to avoid the extra media attention, even though he knows some level of it is a part of the job.

"I don't love doing a whole bunch of interviews and things," he said. "I'm always like, 'Just leave me alone [from extra media] for one week.'"

As his brother JJ, who Chris thought was a natural choice for a media job when he retired, starts up his post-career move behind a camera, TJ has a dream scenario to go to the sideline when his days in the NFL as a player are over.

Steelers' Watt Would Love To Go Into Coaching With His Other Brother

The Steelers organization seems to breed coaches from current or former players. Cam Heyward was tabbed by Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio as a potential head coaching candidate. Minkah Fitzpatrick got involved with play-calling on the defensive side in a key moment during the Steelers 23-19 win over the Green Bay Packers in Week 10. Watt told the Longs that he could see himself on the sidelines as a coach someday, but he's got a dream scenario that he hopes comes to fruition.

TJ said he'd love to coach the defensive line while letting his older brother and former Steelers fullback Derek Watt take the head coaching job.

"That's my lane because I could show up to practice, if I'm there, it's cool, if I'm not, then it's cool," he said. "I just don't want to be the head guy."

JJ got in on the fun despite not being the one interviewed. On X (formerly Twitter), JJ sent in his little retort for the comments his brother made about his perhaps best described as laissez-faire attitude towards coaching.

TJ should excel at whatever he decides to in his post-playing football career, whenever that may be. As Steelers fans have watched him blossom into one of the best pass rushers in the league with his hard work and determination, he can apply that to something new in retirement. Coaching, media, knitting, TJ Watt can probably thrive at whatever he wants to do.
