Subway says it didn't pull Russell Wilson 'Dangerwich' over trolling, poor play

Michael Blinn of the New York Post suggested on Friday morning that Subway may have pulled its "Dangerwich" sandwich linked with Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson off its menu due to Internet backlash related to at least one television commercial and/or because of Wilson's poor play this season.

Subway has since said that's not the case.

"Subway works with a variety of athlete partners, and The Vault is the perfect place to showcase their favorite sandwiches," a company spokesperson explained to TMZ Sports. "While The Dangerwich sub left The Vault in August to make room for some new, craveable options, don't worry, The Dangerwich will be back soon!"

Wilson and Subway have both been the subject of online criticism as the 33-year-old struggled across his first six games with a Broncos team that enters this Sunday's home game against the 4-2 New York Jets at 2-4. Specifically, the one-time Super Bowl champion signal-caller has been mocked for offering examples during an ad of "Dangeruss" ways to eat the sandwich that shares his nickname:

Additionally, NFL Network analyst Kyle Brandt and former teammate Michael Robinson are among those who have blasted Wilson for being "one of the least authentic personalities we have in this league," a "poser," and a "robot" throughout the first month and a half of a season that's gone poorly for most associated with the Broncos.

Per ESPN stats, Wilson will begin the weekend 24th among eligible signal-callers with an 83.4 passer rating, 26th with a 35.7 total QBR, and 30th with a 58.6% completion percentage on the campaign. He's thrown only five touchdowns to go along with three interceptions.
