Tony Romo speaks from experience in defense of Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift relationship
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

If there’s anybody who knows what it’s like to be in a high-profile public relationship, it’s Tony Romo.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback turned CBS analyst previously dated country music star Carrie Underwood and pop singer/actress Jessica Simpson. And so, Romo can absolutely view the relationship between Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and pop music superstar Taylor Swift, who have been in a public relationship since the start of the 2023 NFL season, from his own experience.

Speaking with the media Tuesday on Super Bowl Radio Row in Las Vegas, Romo said he’s rooting for the two of them, calling them both “special people.”

“I know this, the passion of this sport and seeing him go out and do what he loves and be great at it is a joyful thing. The same way that he’s going to watch her. And I think that in a perfect world, they wouldn’t have all of the media attention around it. But the truth is, they’re just too dominant at what they do. They’re both special people,” Romo said, via Arash Markazi of The Sporting Tribune.

“I love their hearts. I think they’re both incredible human beings who are super genuine. Treat people the same no matter what walk of life you’re in. And you root for people like that… Think they’re two really unique, special people.”

Roger Goodell opens up about Taylor Swift’s impact on the NFL

Swift has undoubtedly raised both her brand, as well as the NFL’s, since going public with her relationship with Kelce. Female viewership of the sport is up. Swifties from around the world are tuning into Chiefs games to see Swift, even if it’s for a five-second shot of her from a stadium suite.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, speaking with reporters in Las Vegas Monday, addressed the impact Swift has had on the league.

“Having the Taylor Swift effect is also positive,” Goodell said. “Both Travis and Taylor are wonderful young people, they seem very happy. She knows great entertainment, and I think that’s why she loves NFL football. I think it’s great to have her apart of it. Obviously, it creates a buzz [and invites] another group of young fans and young women who are interested in why she’s going to this game, why she is interested in this game. Besides Travis, she’s a football fan. And I think that’s great for us.”
