Twitter had some strong reactions to new Lions alternate helmets

The Detroit Lions unveiled their new alternate helmet on Wednesday, and the reaction on social media was a mixed bag of either love or hate.

The unveiling video really plays up the team’s history with the Ford family and features a driver pulling up to Ford Field in a vintage Ford Mustang and pulling out a new blue helmet that features a throwback lion logo the team used from 1946-69 with blue and silver stripes behind it.

While Lions fans seemed to be on-board with the new design, those outside of the Detroit city limits did not seem to be too impressed.

The Lions also tweeted a separate video of receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and head coach Dan Campbell reacting to the helmets.

“This thing is sweet,” Hutchinson said.

“I like it; that’s going to be pretty sharp,” Campbell added.

According to a secondary tweet from the Lions, the metallic blue color of the helmet, which features a matte gray facemask and will only be worn with Detroit’s all-gray alternate uniforms, has never been worn in the NFL before. The design was inspired by the team’s 90-year anniversary.

The unveiling come not long after team President Rod Wood told the Detroit Free Press the team would be breaking in a new alternate helmet in 2023 and new uniforms in 2024.
