Washington HC Ron Rivera: Carson Wentz has 'done a heck of a job'

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera has been all-in on new quarterback Carson Wentz since his team acquired the former Indianapolis Colts' starter in March.

Ahead of last month's NFL Draft, Rivera remarked that Wentz was already creating a "vibe that you’re looking for" inside the locker room, which may have been his way of pouring cold water over the notion that the signal-caller is anything less than an ideal teammate. Wentz is Washington's QB1 for organized team activities ahead of the Memorial Day holiday and, unsurprisingly, has earned additional praise from his head coach.

"I thought he did some really good things," Rivera said of Wentz, according to Zach Selby of the club's website. "Got some pretty good rapport with his guys. The thing I like is about making good decisions. You're seeing a lot of good decisions out there right now."

Rivera later added that Washington was happy to take Wentz off Indianapolis' hands regardless of what may or may not have happened during the 29-year-old's single season with that organization.

"I think this is a good opportunity for Carson. I really do," Rivera explained. "I think he's a guy that's wanted, we want him here. We went out and traded for him and we do expect some good things from him and for him. Very pleased with what we've got, and he's done a heck of a job.

"I'd like to see him continue to progress. With him, it's just about making good decisions, making the right throws, playing fast and not hurrying, you know what I'm saying? Just kind of going through what he's done, take what's out there and he's done that. He did that today. There's a lot of good things. So, a lot of positivity as far as I'm concerned."

While Washington rookie and fifth-round draft pick Sam Howell is expected to receive "opportunities" during summertime workouts, Rivera has made it clear the full-time job belongs to Wentz until further notice.
