Bengals head coach Zac Taylor officially named Cordell Volson the starting left guard on Wednesday afternoon.

Volson impressed in training camp and in the preseason, beating out Jackson Carman for the starting job.

"Consistent growth. He improves everyday," Taylor said. "He takes the teachings and really fights to work on it each day. There's a consistency there that we know what we're getting."

The Bengals haven't given up on Carman, despite going with the rookie. They're hoping the 22-year-old will improve and contribute at some point this season.

"Jackson has come a long way since last year even," Taylor said. "I like Jackson; I like what he's about. I think he has a very bright future here. Right now, he's just our backup guard."

The Bengals acquired Max Scharping on waivers from the Texans on Wednesday. The 26-year-old could push Carman for the backup job and gives Cincinnati another veteran that they can rely on in the trenches.
