Lather, Rinse, Repeat: Makar Makes NHL History Again
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

As far as I know, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar is not Superman. However, with the way he’s consistently breaking NHL records, I can’t say for certain one way or the other.

With his three assist game on Saturday night, Makar became the fastest defenseman in NHL history to reach 200 assists. He did so in just 254 career games. The previous holder of the record was Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes, who reached 200 assists in just 263 games last March.

Makar broke this record just one month after he became the fastest defenseman in NHL history to hit 250 career points. Last season, he became the fastest in history to hit 200 points. Coincidentally enough, he also set that record while playing the Stars in Dallas. I’m assuming it’s just a matter of time before he shatters another record.

When the NHL announces the three stars of the week on Monday, you can almost guarantee that Makar will be one of them. In three games this past week, he racked up eight points, seven of which were assists, and went a +5 in three straight Colorado victories.

The talk around the league has been the red-hot start to the season by Quinn Hughes, and yes, Hughes is off to an absurd start, having picked up 28 points in 18 games. Makar is hot on his trails, though.

With 13 points in his last six games, Makar has skyrocketed up the scoring leaders in the NHL. He now sits with 24 points in 16 games, and currently leads the Avalanche in scoring. All the hype is around Hughes right now, but if Makar keeps this up, there may be another Norris Trophy in his future.

The funny part about all of this is that for the majority of the season, Avalanche fans have wondered if Makar is even 100%. After missing the start of training camp, and exiting two games this year with an injury, it’s understandable that his health may still be in question. That makes what he’s doing even more remarkable. If he’s not 100% and is still doing what he’s doing, he’s just simply built different.

Stay tuned to CHN for more news as it comes in, and while I’m here, I might as well write the article about Makar being one of the stars of the week right now.
