Opinion: Did EA get Keller and Maccelli’s NHL 24 Ratings Right?
Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

With the worldwide launch of EA Sports’ NHL 24 video game on Oct. 6, player ratings are dropping before the release and Coyotes star Clayton Keller is an 89 overall and Matias Maccelli will be 84 overall.

But the question is, did EA get it right with both “Yotes overalls in the game?

Clayton Keller

Coyotes star Keller is going to be 89 overall this year and when looking at the players in front of him on the list, both the rating and ranking seem fair, but I believe EA got it wrong with the players around him.

With 37 goals and 49 assists for 82 points in 86 games, Keller getting an 89 overall makes sense.

However, Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand shouldn’t be two overalls higher than Keller either.

Marchand had a major hip injury to begin last year and returned earlier than expected in late October.

In doing so, his production took a hit last year since he has went from an over a point-per-game player since 2016 to 67 points in 73 games.

That is still a good season, but doesn’t warrant being a 91 overall, two above the players 7-10.

If he was 89 overall like the players behind him on the list, it’d be more justifiable.

Marchand being the same overall as Capitals future hall-of-famer Alex Ovechkin doesn’t make much sense since Ovechkin continues to get 40+ goals every season, even at age 38.

If it was up to me, I would move Marchand down to 10 and everyone else below fifth move up 1 spot, making Keller the sixth-best left winger.

Matias Maccelli

As for Maccelli, an 84 overall as well makes sense.

Having the third most amount of points on the Coyotes with 11 goals and 38 assists for 49 points, only behind Keller and fellow winger Nick Schmaltz (58 points in 63 games), the 84 overall EA gave him makes sense.

The players in front of him, in terms of overall, are also understandable since they have been in the league longer and have been more productive than Maccelli.

At the time of reporting, the overalls for the rest of the Arizona Coyote’s roster have yet to be announced.
