Ottawa Senators’ goalie Anton Forsberg leaves game versus Sabres with injury
Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

Anton Forsberg has left tonight’s game between the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres with a lower-body injury. Late in the first period, after a rush from Sabres’ forward Zach Benson, Forsberg made an awkward play that left him in a lot of pain. There was no contact on the play from any skater from the Sabres or Senators. The Ottawa netminder had to be helped off the ice by the team trainer due to his not being able to put any weight on one of his legs.

This is a very scary injury for Forsberg and the Senators as he has a history of serious knee injuries. Last season, after a collision on the ice he tore the MCL in both of his knees and missed the rest of the year because of it. He had a clean bill of health at the start of this season but that is now in jeopardy.

Forsberg is the second Senator to sustain an injury in the last couple games. Josh Norris went down hard during the team’s game against the Calgary Flames and it is unknown when he will be able to return to the lineup. Joonas Korpisalo replaced Forsberg in net for tonight’s game. Due to the injury occurring in the first period, there’s a lot of time left in the game for any number of things to happen. The emergency backup has likely been notified that there is a slight chance he’ll have to suit up tonight if anything were to happen to Korpisalo.

If Forsberg is going to miss games due to this injury the team will likely call up Mads Sogaard from the Belleville Senators to form a goalie tandem with Korpisalo in Ottawa. Sogaard played 19 games in the NHL last year after Forsberg went down with the injury, putting up a record of 8-6-3 with a 3.32 GAA and .889 SV%.

This year, Sogaard has been playing well in Belleville. He has a 8-5-2 record with a 2.48 GAA and .920 SV%.
