Penguins Put Johnsson on Waivers, Will Terminate Contract
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed forward Andreas Johnsson on unconditional waivers, for the purpose of terminating his contract.

They signed him to a one-year, one-way contract with an $800,000 salary-cap hit as a free agent this summer.

Johnsson is expected to return to his native Sweden.

Johnsson, 28, was assigned to the Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre during training camp, but he did not appear in any games there during the regular season after getting into one preseason game.

The team subsequently announced that he was “away from the team, tending to a personal matter.”

Johnsson had nine goals and 21 assists in 36 games with the Utica Comets of the AHL last season.

When his contract is off their books, it is believed the Pittsburgh Penguins will have 47 players on NHL deals. The maximum allowed is 50.
