Penguins’ Tristan Jarry leaves game early with injury after collision

The injury occurred late in the second period of the game after Jarry went just outside of the crease and got his head clipped by Henrique’s hip as the Ducks center was skating by. Henrique was not penalized on the play, and Jarry immediately left the game. He had been pitching a shutout up to that point, stopping all 21 shots he faced in 38:15 of ice time with the Pens up 1-0. There’s no specifics on the injury or how long it will keep him out, but it is likely a head/upper-body injury.

Jarry, 28, had been off to a rough start in 2023-24 and played a big role in the Pens early-season struggles. He's posted a 3-5-0 record, .897 save percentage and a 0.56 5v5 goals saved above expected through eight games going into Tuesday’s game, although he also already has two shutouts on the year. He’s consistently been one of the worst goalies at stopping high-danger chances, with an .818 5v5 high-danger save% since 2020 that’s the sixth worst among goalies with 5,000 minutes of ice time in that span, compared to his .921 regular 5v5 save% that is ninth among that same group.

Jarry was a second-round pick of the Penguins in the 2013 NHL draft, and has spent the entirety of his eight-season NHL career in Pittsburgh, although he didn’t secure a full-time gig until his fourth season in 2019 due to being lower on the depth chart as well as injury problems. He’s in the first year of a five-year contract with a $5.375 cap hit, one he signed in the 2023 offseason after briefly going to free agency.

If Jarry’s injury ends up being long term, it could prove to be a problem for the Penguins goalie situation, as Alex Nedeljkovic is already out with an injury and is on injured reserve until November 19. Magnus Hellberg will fill in as the starter for the time being, so far playing just one game this season where he stopped 17 of 19 shots in relief of Jarry. Should Jarry miss future games, the Pens will need to call up either Joel Blomqvist or Taylor Gauthier from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
