Philadelphia Flyers sign Cam York to two-year contract with $1.6 million AAV

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenseman Cam York to a two-year contract with a cap hit of $1.6 million.

York, 22, was a restricted free agent after the conclusion of his three-year entry-level contract that came at a cap hit of $880,833. He nearly doubles his cap hit with his new contract, with his closest cap hit comparables on the blueline being Sean Durzi at $1.7 million and Jani Hakanpaa at $1.5 million.

York got some more time in the NHL this season with a career-high 54 games, with 2 goals, 18 assists, and 20 points in those games. He also played 20 games for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, where he had 3 goals, 10 assists, and 13 points.

York also proved to be a strong defensive option on the Flyers, leading their blueline in both 5v5 shot attempt share with 47.99% and 5v5 expected goals share with 51.71%, being one of two defenders on the team to be above 50% in the latter stat as well.

York was the 14th overall pick of the Flyers in the 2019 draft, and opted to play two seasons with the University of Michigan before signing his entry-level contract in 2021, playing some professional hockey to close out that season. He’s since spent the past two full seasons in the Flyers organization, bouncing between the AHL and the NHL.

York is the second signing of the day for the Flyers, also locking up RFA Noah Cates to a two-year deal. They’ve made a few other big signings this offseason, like Garnet Hathaway, Ryan Poehling, Marc Staal, and Aleksei Kolosov, and also made a three-team trade earlier in the summer that saw them send Ivan Provorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets while also taking on Cal Petersen and Sean Walker’s contracts from the Los Angeles Kings for a first-round pick, two second-round picks, and Helge Grans. They currently have just over $1.2 million in cap space, with Morgan Frost as the only remaining RFA on their roster.
