Sabres goaltender Eric Comrie out multiple weeks with lower-body injury

The Buffalo Sabres will be without goaltender Eric Comrie for multiple weeks as he recovers from a lower-body injury, general manager Kevyn Adams told reporters Friday.

Comrie, 27, made an early exit from Wednesday’s game against the Ottawa Senators after an awkward collision involving Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin and Senators forward Mathieu Joseph.

As Joseph drove toward the net, Dahlin lined him up and delivered a heavy open-ice hit that sent the Senators forward to the ice — right on top of Comrie.

Comrie remained in the game for a short while after the collision but was ultimately replaced by Craig Anderson after Brady Tkachuk scored to put the Senators up 2–1.

With Comrie on the shelf for the time being, it appears the Sabres will go with a tandem of Anderson and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (recalled from the American Hockey League on Thursday) for the foreseeable future.

The Sabres signed Comrie to a two-year, $1.8 million AAV contract as an unrestricted free agent this past summer. In 39 career games with the Jets, Red Wings, Devils, and Sabres, the Edmonton, AB product has a 17–17–1 record and a .900 save percentage.

The Winnipeg Jets originally selected Comrie in the second round (No. 59 overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft. The 6’1″ goaltender spent parts of three seasons with the Jets to start his career before returning to Winnipeg in 2021 after brief stints with the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings.

Comrie has a 4–7–0 record and a .887 save percentage in 11 games with the Sabres this season. His counterpart, Anderson, has a 3–3–0 record and a .910 save percentage in seven games.

The Sabres currently rank seventh in the NHL’s Atlantic Division with a 7–10–0 record and 14 points through 17 games to begin the 2022–23 regular season. They’ll return to action against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
