Senators' Forsberg stretchered off ice after collision

Senators goalie Anton Forsberg had to be stretchered off the ice during the third period of his team’s game against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Oilers forward Zach Hyman was pushed into the goaltender, who fell awkwardly into the net. Trainers came onto the ice to help Forsberg to the locker room with a stretcher.

The injury comes at a difficult time for the Senators, who lost Cam Talbot to a lower-body injury before the all-star break.

Forsberg was making his fourth-consecutive start in relief of Talbot when he had to leave the game hurt. Mads Sogaard, who has played most of his hockey with the AHL Belleville Senators this year, finished the contest.

Forsberg had conceded five goals in the game, a 6-3 shellacking that ended a 4-game win streak for the Sens.

The Senators fell to 24-24-3 on the year and are second-to-last in the Atlantic Division. The home loss was Ottawa’s first game since the break.

Despite a busy off-season during which they added Claude Giroux and Alex DeBrincat, the Senators have not occupied a playoff spot for any significant length of time.

With both of their primary NHL goalies apparently injured, GM Pierre Dorion may have to reevaluate his team’s strategy as the trade deadline approaches.

Before Saturday’s loss, Forsberg was 11-10-2 on the season with a 3.13 GAA and .905 save percentage.  The Swede turned 30 in November and is under contract with Ottawa until 2025.
