Terminated Penguins Forward Signs in Sweden

Johnsson didn’t last long in the organization and things seemed to go down hill pretty quickly after arrival.

In his first summer with the Penguins, new president and general manager Kyle Dubas tried to restructure much of the depth and added a number of names as NHL possibilities.

Johnsson was among the depth options signed who carried a decent bit of NHL experience; he singed a one-year deal with the Penguins and could have been a sleeper pick to be a useful addition to the team.

It became clear pretty quickly that things weren’t going to work, however, as Johnsson didn’t have a great training camp and preseason.

Despite starting camp on a line with Evgeni Malkin, Johnsson was cut from the NHL roster and sent to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Johnsson appeared in one preseason game before leaving the team to handle personal issues.

With his new team in Sweden, Johnsson will have a chance to play with his brother, Jonathan, who has played his whole career in their native country.
