The New Years Resolutions for the Rangers Entering the 2024 Calendar Year

Cue “Auld Lang Syne” as a brand-new year is among us. After indulging in food, drinks, and great company, the Rangers head back to work in a position not many pundits predicted them to be in. New York currently holds a seven-point lead over the second-place Carolina Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division. They have two goaltenders in Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick who go above and beyond in every chance they are given. Artemi Panarin’s 50 points are tied for third in the entire NHL. One might argue that the Rangers do not need to make any changes. Changes or not, here are a few resolutions for the Rangers regarding the rest of the season and the 2024 calendar year.

Resolution #1: Stay Hot in the Faceoff Department

This is one of the resolutions that is not something new, but it is ever important for this team. When Peter Laviolette was brought in to coach this team, he needed a staff to help New York get over the hump. The additions of Phil Housley, Dan Muse, and Michael Peca have been an integral part of the team’s success, specifically that last name mentioned.

When a New York Islanders great was headed behind the Rangers bench, many fans probably laughed at the headline. Aside from Laviolette, Peca has been a saving grace for this Rangers squad. Last season, New York found themselves in the bottom half in team faceoff percentage. Winning only 49.1% of their draws, a change was in order. How many times did you see this team lose a crucial draw in their own zone last season? With a new staff, grizzled veterans, and a pristine system, New York has been towards the top since the start of the 2023-24 season. As of today, New York ranks third in the NHL with a stellar 54.1%.

From an individual standpoint, Vincent Trocheck has stood out among New York’s centremen. His 62.4% is one of the most impressive percentages in the league. With a continued prominence at the draw, New York will benefit greatly a few months from now.

Resolution #2: One More Piece to Finish the Puzzle

This is the resolution that fans will be craving for once the trade deadline approaches. Although they are among the league’s best, there is always room for improvement in terms of New York’s roster. Top to bottom, the lineup continues to impress night in and night out. From the top six scoring to the forecheck of the fourth line, the team is a balanced one. The defensive core has fulfilled their objectives for the most part, which includes sacrificing the body in front of both netminders.

With Filip Chytil returning to Czechia for a career “reset” and Kaapo Kakko beginning to skate on his own, there are concerns regarding the two young forwards. If both remain on LTIR (Long Term Injured Reserve) for the foreseeable future, New York would have over $6 million to play with.

If Kakko does not return to the lineup, then the obvious answer is another right winger. Names being linked to the Rangers include two former Blueshirts. Vladimir Tarasenko would be an ideal reunion with the Ottawa Senators current run of form. Another option would be Anthony Duclair of the San Jose Sharks who is also a pending free agent. With “The Duke” making $3 million, do not be surprised if Drury takes a chance on that contract.

Resolution #3: Win (Against Your Rivals)

This one is more than just win more games, rather to keep up the success against your divisional foes. Thus far, New York is 6-2-0 against the rest of the Metropolitan Division. Having only played the Devils once and yet to play the Islanders, a tough schedule is ahead for Laviolette’s team.

The tough schedule continues Tuesday when the Rangers welcome the Carolina Hurricanes back to Madison Square Garden. This is the first time these teams are playing since the Adam Fox injury from his collision with Sebastian Aho. Will New York carry their momentum into the new year? Only time will tell.
