Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry became just the ninth goalie in National Hockey League history to score a goal by shooting the puck into an empty net. He did so in the third period of Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Jarry, 28, scored his first NHL goal to help seal a 4–2 victory for the Penguins over the Lightning at Amalie Arena. The goal was unassisted and came at the 18:52 mark of the third period.

In addition to his goal, Jarry made 38 saves against the Lightning and was named the game’s first star. He now boasts an 8–8–1 record this year to go along with a .918 save percentage.

Nine goaltenders in NHL history have scored a goal by shooting the puck into an empty net: Jarry, Linus Ullmark, Pekka Rinne, Mike Smith, Evgeni Nabokov, Jose Theodore, Martin Brodeur, Chris Osgood and Ron Hextall. Hextall is the only goaltender ever to score two goals in this fashion.

Numerous other goaltenders have “scored” goals by being the last player to touch the puck before the other team accidentally sent it into its own vacant net. Brodeur scored two additional goals in this fashion; Cam Ward, Chris Mason, Mika Noronen, Damian Rhodes and Billy Smith have also done so.

Jarry is in the first season of the five-year, $5.375 million-AAV contract extension he signed with the Penguins as a pending UFA back on July 1. The Penguins originally selected the Surrey, BC, product back in the second round (No. 44 overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft.

Through 223 NHL games over parts of eight seasons spent exclusively with the Penguins, Jarry has put together a 125–68–21 record to go along with a .914 save percentage and 16 shutouts. He has one goal and 10 assists in his NHL career.
