Wild have a tough decision to make with Jared Spurgeon out for the season

The Minnesota Wild have been dealt blow after blow with injuries and now with captain Jared Spurgeon out for the remainder of the season, GM Bill Guerin has some big decisions to make. Today on Daily Faceoff Live, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss what the blueline looks like and how this could be the end of the season for the Wild.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Let’s head to Minnesota where they were dealt with more tough news as Jared Spurgeon, who was already out of the lineup but now we get told it’s season-ending hip and back surgery for Spurgeon. You look at the Wild blueline and it’s Jonas Brodin and Brock Faber and there’s nothing there. This puts a nail in the coffin, maybe not a large nail but a nail into the Wilds season. 

Frank Seravalli: Im with you. The Spurgeon injury was trending in this direction the last couple of weeks and they wanted to give him two to three weeks to rehab and maybe slog through the season but obviously, that’s not the case. You look at the Wild and where they are and it’s unfortunate for them because Spurgeon is important but they kind of made the right moves.

Frank Seravalli: You think back to the coaching change, they got the bump under Jon Hynes going I think 12-3. So you think this team just like the Oilers are going to find a way after making a coaching change to get back into it and after back to back 100 point seasons and disappointing playoff results I was thinking ‘This is how they get back into the race’ but then the wheels fall off as Spurgeon is out, Brodin is out and Kaprizov is out.

Frank Seravalli: It’s not just the volume of players it’s how critical those pieces are to the team. It’s really difficult to compete and everyone on the Wild has been banged up at one point or another. It feels like Zuccarello has missed lots of time. Brodin hasn’t been healthy all year. No team can withstand losses like this and that’s why I named the Wild as sellers the white flag typically isn’t in Guerin’s arsenal but this team is going to have little choice but to examine what the trade market is for some of these guys including a speedy Brandon Duhaime or Marc-Andre Fleury or Pat Maroon.
