The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo kicked off on Feb. 8 and is now running at full speed. As with most of the major winter rodeos, San Antonio utilizes the tournament bracket style setup where contestants only compete against the 10 athletes in their group.

There are a total of 50 entered in each event. The first 40 of those come from placings in the world standings. The remaining 10 contestants earned their way through a qualifier held in Uvalde, Texas.

Each bracket consists of three full go rounds, with each performance paying the top four placers. Money is paid: $2,500 for first, $2,000 for second, $1,500 for third and $1,000 for fourth for each performance. The four contestants that earn the most money in the three go-rounds move on to the semifinals.

Bracket No. 1 completed Saturday afternoon and qualified the first set of competitors to advance. Two of the event winners came from the contestants who qualified in Uvalde.

Cole Walker from Sparta, Tenn., has been on a winning spree since he competed at his Southeastern Circuit Finals in November in Davie, Fla. The 23-year-old cowboy won the average at his circuit finals, where he tied three calves in 23.5 seconds. He's been fast ever since.

At the qualifier, he was 8.0 and 8.2 seconds to earn his way to the big show. The young roper showed up with ice water in his veins, where he tied his first calf in a solid 10.8 and then came back in the second round and smoked a 7.7-second run for the win. His final performance was a 9.2-second run, and all-in-all, he was the high-money winner, earning $4,500 for his three runs.

In the bull riding, Luke Mast from Hutchinson, Kan., bucked off Amos Moses in round one and then got serious about making the cut. In the next two rounds, Mast was not to be beaten.

Round two brought Six Shooter from the Beutler and Son Rodeo Company in the chute waiting for Mast. Eight seconds later and 82.5 points, Mast collected the $2,500 check.

Repo Man from Big Rafter Rodeo gave it his best shot to unload Mast but failed at the effort. Mast stayed in the middle to earn 84.5 points, the championship for the round, and earned the right to move on to the semifinals as the No. 1 man in the bracket.

The action continued on Super Saturday when bracket No. 2 introduced 10 new cowboys and cowgirls to the arena for their chance to shine over three more rounds.
