How Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens helped the USMNT soar, fly after its win against Iran

The St. Louis Blues had “Gloria.” The Philadelphia Phillies had “Dancing On My Own.” This World Cup, the USMNT has its own rally anthem: “Breaking Free” from “High School Music.”

U.S. men's national team defenseman Walker Zimmerman went on "The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz" and revealed how the team celebrated clinching a spot in the knockout stage of the World Cup by defeating Iran 1-0 on Tuesday.

Zimmerman told Le Batard that defender DeAndre Yedlin DJed on the bus ride after the game and played "Breaking Free" by Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.

"We're soarin', flyin," begins the chorus. The inspirational message serves as a rallying cry for the underdog American team: "There's not a star in heaven that we can't reach."

In 2019, the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues adopted Laura Branigan's 1982 hit single "Gloria" as the team would go on to win the Stanley Cup. This past year, Major League Baseball's Philadelphia Phillies used a cover of Robyn's "Dancing On My Own" by Calum Scott and Tiesto to celebrate victories. The team won the National League and came up two wins short of a World Series title.

The USMNT can only hope "Breaking Free" leads the team on a run similar to the ones experienced by the Blues and Phillies.

Of the remaining teams, the U.S. is 10th in odds to win the World Cup, per Oddschecker. The U.S. is currently at plus-10000 to win. Per Hockey Reference, the St. Louis Blues had pre-season odds of plus-3000 during their championship run. This year, the Phillies were plus-3500 to win the World Series based on preseason odds. The U.S. faces the Netherlands Saturday morning at 10 a.m. EST in the first match of the knockout stage. The team hopes Efron's and Hudgens's words ring true:

"Runnin', climbin', to get to that place to be all that we can be."
