WWE legend considering coming out of retirement for one-time 'gory spectacle'

Mick Foley was once part of the WWE Attitude era — widely regarded as the best in-ring product in history. Now, after a 12-year retirement, the 58-year-old fan favorite is considering a one-fight comeback. 

Foley, who hasn't wrestled since the 2012 Royal Rumble, said during a recent episode of his "Foley is Pod" podcast that he would use the match as fuel to lose 100 pounds.

“60’s right around the corner," Foley said. h/t to Fightful for the transcription. "Thinking of doing one final match for my sixtieth birthday, a Deathmatch. I’m not kidding. I think it’d be a great incentive to drop those 100 big ones. I think it might be fun. No [it wouldn’t be in WWE], I don’t think so. I think it would be a pretty gory spectacle...Moxley or Matt Cardona. I think Moxley would be the easiest, but Matt has that heat in the Deathmatch world that could really make it something cool."

Should Foley return, his match would likely garner worldwide interest. And adding one final page to his story would be captivating for longtime followers of the sport, especially given his age and the injuries he's sustained over the years.

The hardest part might be finding a legitimate wrestling company to sign off on such a dangerous match. Foley will turn 59 in June and Deathmatches are dangerous at the best of times. 

AEW may be the most logical place for an event of this nature to take place. It has a reputation for gruesome matches, a built-in global audience and the financial backing to ensure Foley receives a healthy paycheck. 

Only time will tell if Foley will actually step back in the ring or if his comments are just passing thoughts. But if he is cleared by his doctors and he's willing to participate, there'll be no shortage of interested opponents and Attitude Era fans ready to pay a pay-per-view fee.
