The Scarlet Knights linebacker suffered a new injury while training. On Tuesday, Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano announced that linebacker Tyreem Powell suffered a torn Achilles while training.
Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano announced on Tuesday that starting linebacker Tyreem Powell is likely lost for the season with a broken hand. “Unfortunately, Tyreem’s hand is going to need surgery, so he’s going to be out for a while,” Schiano said.
On fourth and 1 from the Rutgers 41 yard line in the second quarter, Michigan State running back Nate Carter received the hand off in the second quarter.
Rutgers returns both starting linebackers this season in Deion Jennings and Tyreem Powell. They were productive last season and played almost exclusively at linebacker as part of the 4-2-5 defensive scheme.
Rutgers football’s Tyreem Powell earned a spot on the Butkus Award watch list on Thursday. The Butkus Foundation gives the award annually to the nation’s best linebacker.
