Alex Ovechkin: Braden Holtby is 'our best player'

Washington Capitals goalkeeper Braden Holtby is in the midst of a career season.

His play has been so stellar that Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin, considered the best hockey player on the planet by some, wants that title bestowed on his star netminder.

"The goaltending is 75 percent of the team, or 80 percent," Ovechkin said. "We knew he’s good. He’s our best player and probably the best goalie in the league right now."

In a league that features the likes of Carey Price, Jonathan Quick, Pekka Rinne and Henrik Lundqvist, calling Holtby the best goalie in the NHL might seem far-fetched, but Ovechkin may have a point.

Holtby leads the NHL in wins with with 23, goals against average at 1.85 per game and is second in save percentage at .935.

Of course, the real test for Holtby will come when the playoffs roll around, but there is no doubt the Capitals goaltender is the midst of a Vezina Trophy level season.

His play is a large reason why the Caps lead the Eastern Conference in points and trail only the 57 points by the Dallas Stars in the entire NHL — and Ovie knows it.
